  • Sustainable mining: Centrorochas lecture at congress during EXPOSIBRAM 2022

At the invitation of the Brazilian Institute of Mining (IBRAM), the president of the Brazilian Center for Ornamental Stones Exporters (Centrorochas) and 1st vice-president of Sindirochas (Union of Dimension Stone, Lime and Limestone Industries of the State of Espírito Santo), Tales Machado, was one of the speakers on the panel “Challenges of small and medium sustainable mining”, held at Expo & Congresso Brasileiro de Mining (EXPOSIBRAM 2022), one of the largest mining exhibitions in Latin America.

Consisting of two major simultaneous actions (space for lectures, seminars and business roundtables and an international fair with hundreds of stands), the event took place between September 12th and 15th, at EXPOMINAS BH, in Belo Horizonte (MG).

During his participation, Tales Machado highlighted that he expects significant advances in the management of mineral resources with the regulatory agenda. Among the points of progress, he cited the development of more objective analyzes and the boldness to detach the environmental licensing procedure from that of mineral concessions “We have to leave the specialty analysis to each competent body. For agency, the development of mineral extraction; for the environmental agencies, the controls aimed at sustainability”, he stressed. He also addressed the progress of the stone sector in the issue of landfills. “It was an inter-institutional effort that involved the Public Ministry of Espírito Santo, the environmental licensing body (IEMA), business associations, mainly Sindirochas, the main union in the stone sector in the country, in addition to municipalities and society. This achievement represents a successful case of cross-cutting mobilization including the public and private sectors”, he pointed out.

In addition to the president of Centrorochas, the panel had the participation of representatives of several national entities: Alex dos Santos Macedo (OCB – Organization of Brazilian Cooperatives); Fernando Valverde (ANEPC – National Association of Aggregates Producers for Construction); Giorgio de Tomi (NAP Mineração/USP – Research Center for Responsible Small Mining); José Fernando Coura (Sindiextra) and Miguel Antônio Cedraz Nery (ABPM – Brazilian Association of Mineral Research and Mining Companies).

Sindirochas’ lawyer and environmental and mineral legal advisor, Victor Athayde, was also present at the event.
