  • Concert in Verona celebrates 150 years of Italian immigration to Brazil

Verona, Italy – In the heart of Verona, a historic city that evokes Italy’s golden age, on September 23, Teatro Nuovo will open its doors for a musical event to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the ship “La Sofia” in Brazil. An initiative developed by the Consulate General of Brazil in Milan and the Brazilian Center of Natural Stone Exporters (Centrorochas), the event will celebrate the historic milestone with a special performance by Orquestra Dedilharcos, an orchestra of guitars and violins from the state of Espírito Santo, the largest exporter of natural stones in Brazil.

From September 24 to 27, Verona will host the most important world fair dedicated to the entire stone production chain: Marmomac. The Brazilian Pavilion at the fair will bring together 37 companies exhibiting some of the greatest geodiversity in the world. According to the president of Centrorochas, Tales Machado, several aspects of the traditions of the two countries are intertwined, such as culture and economy.

Italy is the third largest destination for Brazilian exports of natural stones. “Brazil is the fourth largest producer and the fifth largest exporter of this segment in the world. And Espírito Santo is the Brazilian state with the largest concentration of stone companies and, consequently, the leader in exports. Around 70% of the population of Espírito Santo has Italian ancestry and, naturally, many of the companies in the segment are led by descendants of these very friendly people. This highlights the strong connection between Brazil, and our sector, and Italy,” Machado stated.

For the Consul General of Brazil in Milan, Ambassador Hadil da Rocha-Vianna, this is yet another moment to strengthen the relationship between the two countries. “It is an honor and a pleasure to hold this concert in Verona, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the beginning of Italian immigration to Brazil. More than a celebration, it is a testament to the deep friendship and cooperation between Brazil and Italy. This relationship continues to thrive, strengthened by the history of so many immigrants, many of whom are from Veneto. They have undoubtedly contributed to enriching the next chapters of our countries’ shared history,” he added.

International tour with Brazilian classics

Orquestra Dedilharcos is the result of Instituto Preservarte, which promotes social inclusion through artistic projects and professional training for musicians. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the institute, the group goes on tour with performances in Brazil and Italy, promoted by the Ministry of Culture, financed by Lei de Incentivo à Cultura [Culture Incentive Law], and supported by the Consulate General of Brazil in Milan and Centrorochas.

The program for September 23 at Teatro Nuovo di Verona includes classics of Brazilian music such as bossa nova, chorinho, forró, congo, and regional songs, with compositions by renowned national composers such as Tom Jobim, Sivuca, Vinícius de Moraes, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Dominguinhos, Alceu Valença, Luiz Gonzaga, and Ary Barroso. The repertoire includes arrangements by maestro Washington Vieira and musicians Luís Ranna and Fabio Calazans.

The concert will be free, but the reservations website must be accessed to RSVP. Seats are limited, subject to theater capacity.  Visit: https://www.eventbrite.it/e/biglietti-concerto-dedicato-ai-150-anni-dellimmigrazione-italiana-in-brasile-1004465512387?aff=oddtdtcreator
